Lula Madeline Riley was born January 15, 1891 in Bertram, Texas. She met William O’Donnell while attending Transylvania College (now known as Transylvania University) in Lexington KY, and they married in 1909. They began their married life in Carrollton KY where Dr. O’Donnell was first a Principal then the Superintendent. They succeeded Dr. and Mrs. Donovan upon their leave for the University of Kentucky.
Lula O’Donnell served as first lady of Eastern from 1941-1960 the longest in Eastern’s history. Lula was an avid gardener, an expert in homemaking and most importantly a dedicated wife and mother. William and Lula were proud parents to four children two boys and two girls. Mr. and Mrs. O’Donnell were members of the Methodist Church. Even after retirement they frequented campus activities such as sporting events, and musical performances. Upon her death in 1973 she was beloved by all who knew her. It was only three months later that Dr. O’Donnell would join her in death.
