Bibliography

Anne French Hoge was born November 1, 1912 in Frankfort, KY. She met Dr. Robert R. Martin while he was working in Frankfort at the Department of Education; they married on May 31, 1952. Anne stood by Martins side as the states superintendent of public instruction, to his induction as Eastern’s 6th president. She served as First lady from 1960 to 1976 being the second longest reign in Eastern’s history. In honor of Anne’s commitment to the University Ingleside Gate was placed at the opening of campus from Second Street. The gate originally came from the homestead of Colonel Eugene Hoge the paternal grandfather of Percy Echols Hoge, father of Anne French Hoge Martin. They were placed in appreciation and recognition of the efforts and contributions Anne made in the growth of the University. The plaque attached to the gate states that it symbolizes “Beauty, truth, duty, and charity”. After retirement Anne supported Dr. Robert R. Martin through two terms as he represented the 22nd district in the Kentucky State Senate.
